ARF Calls for Dissolution of Parliament

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Armenian Revolutionary Federation Executive Council of Armenia issued the following statement Wednesday calling for the dissolution of the National Assembly.

"The processes that began in Armenia in February 1998 cannot be viewed as complete as long as the anti-national policy of the former administration is not overcome.

"At present–the Parliament formed through rigged elections in 1995 is continuing the same policy as its major instrument to stop any attempt of reforms and protect persons who committed crimes under the previous regime. This policy and the hesitation of the new administration have plunged the republic into a crisis.

"ARF strongly believes that the last change of leadership should be followed by changes in the previous policy. By giving protection to former officials charged with crimes the overwhelming majority of the National Assembly means to continue the policy of the former regime rather than try to save a deputy from justice.

It is no coincidence that former president Levon Ter-Petrosyan for the first time broke his silence after the parliament rejected to lift Siradeghian’s immunity. He realizes that the very first step to establish law will pave the way for the disclosure of crimes committed by the former regime and bring clarity into the anti-national policy he–himself–was responsible for above all–as well as overcome the opposition that caused reforms to fail and compromised–in the eyes of the people–the high-pitched national goals the current administration and forces supporting it have set to achieve.

The attempt by the National Assembly to shield its deputies charged with crimes–can be deemed as a desire to support the criminal policy of the former regime–to stop changes and consistently sabotage all positive processes in the country–stating that the atmosphere of impunity has already paid the way for new–undetectable crimes–stressing that the current situation may thwart public hopes to restore justice and disrupt the foundations of our statehood– * The ARF deems it necessary that the National Assembly be dissolved and is calling upon the people to support the efforts to re-establish the rule of law. * The ARF expects the president to display political prowess and use his authority to take effective steps to translate his election pledges into action."
