Destructive Attacks on Argentine Armenian Group Must End

BUENOS AIRES–The Armenian Cultural Society of Argentina–which has been working for decades to preserve the national identity and interests of the Argentine-Armenian community–as well as pursue the Armenian cause and assist in the strengthening of the homeland has found itself facing undue attacks by several ill-minded individuals in the community.

In an announcement issued last week–the executive board of the ACS appealed to the public at large–in Armenia and throughout the Diaspora–to judge for itself the extent of destructive attacks on the organization and its merits vis–vis the impetus to strengthen national unity and cooperation.

The ACS explained that since 1992–two individuals–namely Antranig Aslanian and Vahan Berberian–both of whom have been banished from the ran’s of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation–have been making baseless accusations against ACS and have been seeking a government investigation into the organization’s activities.

"The two individuals have resorted to radical and destructive measures–in their approach to the organization," the statement warned.

The ACS explained that both Aslanian and Berberian have accused the organization of fraud and have forced the organization to expend human and financial resources to address the legal case against the organization.

"In concert with the legal law suit against the organization–gross attacks and scandalous threats against members of the ACS and the organization (some blatant and others reminiscent of Mafia tactics) have been waged," the statement charged.

"The executive Board of ACS is convinced that because of the legal steps it has taken and–especially due to the support of its followers and other organizations in the community–all threats will fail and the organization can devote all its resources and attention to the pursuit of the Armenian Cause and the assistance to the homeland," the statement pledged.

Despite the optimism–the ACS found it necessary to bring the issue to the attention of public opinion and warn the community against this anti-national attempt to create schism within the Argentine-Armenian community.

"Today–more than ever–especially given the upcoming conference on Homeland-Diaspora relations–our national unity is imperative. And individuals like Andranig Aslanian and Vahan Berberian–who have been blinded by their own self-serving interests–and aim to fight against community institutions and create national schism–must receive the entire nation’s unanimous condemnation," concluded the statement.
