New Election Code is a Result of True Compromise Says Kocharian

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Chairing the regular meeting of the Presidential Political Council Wednesday–President Robert Kocharian expressed his opinion of the recently adopted election law–describing its passage as a sign of true compromise by various political factions.

He said it was impossible to adopt a law which would be approved by all sides–adding that only the provision concerning the election of community leaders was the sole point of contention.

Kocharian stated that a good law did not necessarily guarantee the proper organization of elections and vice versa. In his opinion–the most important aspect of a successful election was the atmosphere in which the polls were held–the more civilized the atmosphere–the more favorable conditions will be created for organizing elections.

"This should become a great responsibility both for the authorities and for the opposition," Kocharian stressed. He also announced that a meeting with all political forces would be convened to gauge their opinion regarding the upcoming elections and the election law–in particular.

The president explained to Political Council members the political processes in the country and relations with Parliament.
