Pilibos Students Score Big at Academic Decathlon

LOS ANGELES–Students from Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School placed first in their division and third in overall rankings Saturday at the Southern California Private Schools Academic Decathlon. The AGBU Manoogian-Demirjian school and the Holy Martyrs Ferrahian Armenian school ranked 13th and 18th respectively.

For Alex Pilibos students–however–Saturday brought them a victory–for which they had been preparing since summer when the team was selected based on the students’ academic performance.

Alex Pilibos school garnered the third place with 32,485 points out of a possible 60,000. The host school–Bishop Alemany High School in Mission Hills–also took the overall first place in the private school competition.

Manoogian-Demirjian walked away with 26,735 and Ferrahian finished the competition with 23,325 points.

The 18th annual contests–which was held in three separate competitions throughout LA County–tested the students’ knowledge and understanding of the human brain.

The questions covered such topics as emotion modulation to the number of lobes in the cerebrum.

This was the third time Pilibos participated in the Academic Decathlon… The team’s Coach Jacqueline Mishler spent the last six month with the nine-member team to prepare and encourage them for the decathlon.
