Aliyev Appeals to US France Russia On Conflict

BAKU (Agence France Presse)–Azeri President Haydar Aliyev has asked his US–French and Russian counterparts to apply pressure to break a deadlock in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace talks–the foreign ministry said Tuesday.

A ministry statement quoted a letter Aliyev sent on Tuesday to presidents Bill Clinton–Jacques Chirac and Boris Yeltsin–whose countries co-chair negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

"Armenia’s non-constructive position creates serious obstacles to the peace process and therefore the peace talks perpetually do not produce needed results," read the statement.

"President of the Azeri republic calls on the US–French and Russian presidents to increase their personal involvement and the activity of their governmen’s to reach a resolution to the conflict," the statement added.

Aliyev also said that the most recent proposal by the co-chairs–for Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan to create a union state between themselves–hindered the peace process.
