Haroutunian Urges Azeri Counterpart to Cooperate

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Khosrov Haroutiunian addressed a letter to his Azeri counterpart Murtuz Aleskerov in regards to the initiatives he had advanced to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

The letter reads:

Taking into consideration the growing role of parliamentarism in solving all-important problems–proceeding from the spirit and principles of parliamentary diplomacy–I consider it possible to address you.

My profound conviction is that our people realize the vital importance of peace in the region–the beginnings of which was marked in 1994 by the efforts of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly. Having no doubts about the sincere aspirations of different countries and international organizations for establishing stability–at the same time I find and hope that you are of the same opinion that to achieve stable peace in our common south-Caucasian house is possible only by our common efforts.

The future of our countries and the whole region depends on whether we will find the real ways of solving rather difficult problems on the threshold of the 21st century.

Realizing the need for peaceful dialogue–which has no alternative–I considered it possible to apply to PACE with the following initiatives:

-To arrange a meeting of the speakers of the Armenian–Azerbaijani and Georgian Parliamen’s under the auspices of PACE;

-Arrange a number of seminars on the most important problems of the regional cooperation in the capitals of the three Transcaucasian countries in turn under the auspices of PACE;

Dear Mr. Aleskerov–I hope for your cooperation in putting into practice my initiatives.
