Azerbaijan Accuses Armenia on Nakhichivan

BAKU (AFP)–Yerevan is preparing to annex Azerbaijan’s southern province of Nakhichivan–a region separated from Azerbaijan proper by a swathe of Armenian territory–officials in Baku alleged Thursday.

Defense Ministry spokesperson Ramiz Melikov said that Armenia had formed a political action group called Nakhichivan Brotherhood in order to foment tensions and attack the region.

" Armenia is preparing to annex Nakhichivan," Melikov said. "This is proven by a number of factors: the creation of the Brotherhood committee–Russia’s militarization of Armenia and Armenia’s frequent cease-fire violations."

Yerevan cut off Baku’s rail link to the region’s more than 270,000 inhabitants when fighting broke out over Nagorno-Karabakh.

Baku has intensified its political statemen’s against Yerevan in recent months–accusing Armenia of preparing an attack with the aid of Russian troops and equipment stationed on its territory.
