ARF Rep. Discusses Upcoming Elections

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"It’s time society and politicians saw that another failure to hold free and fair elections would make it extremely difficult to establish a law-abiding state in Armenia," Aghvan Vardanian–head of the political division of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Executive Council of Armenia–said in a Noyan Tapan interview.

He went on to say that his party would try to make use of all leverages available to ensure fair conduct in the elections and that the party hoped for this election process to prove much better than the legislative elections of 1995–the local elections of 1996 and the presidential election of 1998.

According to Vardanian–the results of continuing negotiations with other influential political forces are encouraging and offer grounds for optimism that election struggle will be waged properly.

Speaking of the large number of political parties in Armenia–more than 70–the ARF official said that after the May elections Armenia’s political scene will change–occasional parties will vanish–with only 3-4 major parties involved in active politics.

The ARF also announced Tuesday that it did not conclude any agreement with either the Constitutional Right Union or its leader Hrant Khachatrian–deputy representative of the Executive Council of the ARF in Armenia Armen Rustamian said–commenting about a statement made by Vigen Hakopian–a representative of the Law and Unity election bloc. According to Hakopian’s statement the ARF has broken an agreement with the CRU and will support the candidacy of Liudmila Haroutiunian–head of the department of sociology of the Yerevan State University–in the fourth election district–where Hrant Khachatrian was going to run for parliament.

Rustamian stressed that Liudmila Haroutiunian is not a member of ARF and was not nominated by the party. According to Rustamian–the Armenian Revolutionary Federation has not yet decided whom it will support in that district.
