Armenia Expected to Increase Export of Electricity to Georgia

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Georgian Kavkazpress news agency reported that the capacity of electricity supplied to Georgia by Armenia will soon reach 200 megawatts after an agreement reached in Yerevan during the proceedings of the interparliamentary commission of Armenia and Georgia.

Quoting the head of the Georgian delegation–vice-speaker of Parliament Vakhtang Kolbaya–the source said that the agreement wasn’t foiled even by the fact that Georgia has debts to Armenia for electricity already supplied. According to Kavkazpress–the Georgian side has to ensure uninterrupted delivery of Turkmen gas to Armenia after technical issues between Armenia and Turkmen’stan are resolved.

Yuri Bakhshian–deputy speaker of the Armenian parliament and co-chairman of the interparliamentary commission–commented on this information spread by the Georgian news agency. He acknowledged that the issue of increased electricity supplies to Georgia had been discussed–however no documen’s had been signed and specific figures cited as it is beyond the interparliamentary commission to make such decisions.

However–the Georgian delegation also included energy officials–and–according to Bakhshian–it is not excluded that concrete agreement was reached between the relevant departmen’s of the two countries.

In a Noyan Tapan interview–Deputy Energy Minister Karen Galstian neither confirmed nor denied the information. The only thing he mentioned was that Armenia is able to provide such a capacity and even wants to find more high-voltage electricity consumers. However–supplying 200 megawatts of electricity involves certain risks for the Armenian energy system in the event of an emergency within electricity networks in Georgia.
