Speaker Says Primary Objective Is to Make Reforms Irreversible

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Election campaigns are being conducted in accordance with the law–in a free–easy and transparent atmosphere–Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia Khosrov Haroutiunian said–describing election campaigns in Armenia–at a meeting with a delegation of the Committee for foreign relations of the House of Commons of the British Parliament led by Peter Emery.

Haroutiunian noted that both political forces and the population stress the importance of holding fair elections–since the currently forming economic system is based on free elections. According to Speaker–the primary political objective during the elections will be to make reforms irreversible. Simultaneously–he said–it is necessary to win the population’s confidence in relation to this policy. Haroutiunian noted the importance of solving problems–mostly of social nature–which emerge during the transition.

Admitting that the Russian crisis had a certain impact on Armenia’s economy–Haroutiunian said that cooperation will continue–because it is mutually beneficial and is not directed against any third country. The similarity between Russia’s interests and the interests of regional countries creates opportunities for stable and peaceful development.

During the meeting the sides discussed Armenia’s membership to the Council of Europe–Armenia’s active participation in European structures–and regional cooperation.
