Council of CIS Defense Ministers Ends Meeting

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Yerevan meeting of the Council of CIS Defense Ministers is more evidence of common interest in developing constructive cooperation in military policy and construction–President Robert Kocharian said in his welcoming remarks to the participants in the 32nd meeting of the Council of CIS Defense Ministers.

Stressing that the Council of the CIS Defense Ministers is one of the most important CIS structures–the president pointed out that the drafts of the documen’s concerning military issues prepared by the Council were submitted many times for the consideration of the Council of CIS Prime Ministers and Council of CIS Heads of State.

Kocharian said–translating into reality the revised and agreed documen’s–the CIS member-states maintain their military potential on a necessary level. At the same time the parties to the Collective Security Treaty aspire to use the CIS’s military potential and resources as much as possible.

Kocharian said that there are many problems; the countries are in a difficult transitional period. Reforms are carried out in the government structures and economy–legal and social systems. The complex process of forming national armies involves the necessity for their being immediately reformed.

Robert Kocharian expressed conviction that the Yerevan meeting of the Council of CIS Defense Ministers will play its role in promoting positive changes. He expressed confidence that the activities of the CIS defense ministers will be constructive and will not only meet the present-day requiremen’s but also be in line with "our long-term strategy."
