Sestanovich Stresses Importance of Participation in TRACECA

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Armenian Prime Minister Armen Darbinian met late last week with Advisor to the US Secretary of State for the Newly Independent States Stephen Sestanovich. During the meeting the two discussed the prospects for regional cooperation. Sestanovich pointed out the importance of Armenia’s participation in the TRACECA program and stated that it supplied a new sense to the cooperation. He reported that new approaches to the regional cooperation will be determined at the coming Forum on Transcaucasian Cooperation concerning which an agreement with Georgia has already been arrived at.

Stressing the importance of Armenia’s participation in the INOGATE and TRACECA programs–Prime Minister Darbinian pointed out: "The economic dialogue that has already been initiated is most important–and it is imperative that it should be continued."

Among other issues the sides also addressed those related to the humanitarian assistance rendered to Armenia by international organizations. Sestanovich stated that they are ready to assist Armenia in transport–energy–water supply and customs spheres. He also pointed out the importance of drawing up a strategic plan in these and other spheres.

In his turn–Prime Minister Darbinian pointed out that the government is currently working on this program–regarding as priority the consistency in implementing reforms. During the meeting the sides also discussed the order of Armenia’s admission to the World Trade Organization.
