Hovanessian to Chair Defense Commission

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The National Assembly of Armenia elected Friday chairmen of six standing committees–one of whom was Armenian Revolutionary Federation Executive Council of Armenia member and the leader of the ARF parliamentary bloc Vahan Hovanessian–who was elected to chair the commission of defense–internal affairs and national security

Of 129 members of parliament 127 participated in a secret ballot voting.

Armen Khachatrian of the Unity bloc was elected chairman of the committee for foreign relations.

Gagik Tadevossian of the Communist Party of Armenia was elected chairman of the committee for social–health care and environment protection issues.

Yuri Bakhshian of the Unity bloc was elected chairman of the committee for state and legal issues.

Vardan Khachatrian of the Unity bloc was elected chairman of the committee for financial-crediting–budgetary and economic issues.

Vahan Hovanessian of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation was elected chairman of the committee for defense–internal affairs and national security.

Shavarsh Kocharian of the National Democratic Union was elected chairman of the committee for sciences–education and culture.

The National Assembly also passed a resolution on the number of members of committees and the order of their formation–in accordance with which quotas for six factions–"Stability" deputy group and independent representatives in standing committees were endorsed. The committees for state and legal issues–for financial–crediting and economic issues will include 32 members. The rest of the committees will have 16 members each. According to regulations–chairman of the National Assembly and his two deputies cannot be members of any committee.

Albert Bazeyan–a deputy speaker–said June 11 that the Unity faction embraces 61 deputies. The faction head is Andranik Margarian–secretary – Gagik Aslanian.

The communist faction consists of 10 deputies and is headed by Sergey Badalian; secretary–Ruben Hakobian.

The Right & Unity faction includes 7 deputies and is headed by Artashes Geghamian; secretary–Hayk Babukhanian.

The Orinats Yerkir faction consists of 6 deputies and is headed by Artur Baghdasarian; secretary–Gegham Gasparian.

The NDU faction includes 6 deputies and is headed by Vazgen Manoukian; secretary–Seiran Avagian.

The Kayunutsiun (stability) deputy group embraces 21 deputies and is headed by Hovhannes Hovhannissian; secretary–Vardan Aivazian.

10 of the 129 elected deputies of the National Assembly are not yet affiliated with any faction or deputy group.
