Armenian Ambassador Presents Credentials to Syria’s President

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Armenia’s Ambassador to Syria Levon Sargssian presented his credentials to that country’s President Hafez al-Asad.

The ambassador reportedly emphasized the willingness and resolution of the Armenian president and government to promote friendly relations between the two nations.

Sargssian also met with Speaker of the Syrian People’s Assembly Abdal-Kadir Kaddura. Ambassador Sargssian briefed Kaddura on the current situation in Armenia and the political and economic processes in the country. In particular–the ambassador informed the speaker of the Syrian Parliament about the results of the recent parliamentary elections in Armenia.

The sides pointed out the importance of friendship groups in the two countries’ Parliamen’s and launching relevant activities. In the new Syrian Parliament a Syrian-Armenian friendship group will be formed within the next few days. In his turn Ambassador Sargssian said that an Armenian-Syrian friendship group will be formed in the Armenian National Assembly after it starts its activities–and its leadership is elected. The sides expressed optimism that the two Parliament’s friendship groups will continue the efficient cooperation which was started during the previous parliamen’s’ activities.

The speaker of the Syrian People’s Assembly re-affirmed his intention to visit Armenia in the near future.
