Prosecutor’s Office Investigates Election Violations

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Nine criminal cases and 56 materials are currently under investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office of Armenia in connection with the violations of law during the election campaign and the parliamentary elections.

The Prosecutor’s Office reported that the director of the energy network of Yerevan’s Davidashen district was relieved of his post for giving orders of illegal disconnections of electricity in the individual neighborhoods during the TV appearances of one of the candidates for Parliament.

Criminal proceedings were not initiated in connection with the statement made by Leader of the "Self-Determination" Union (SDU) Paruyr Hairikian. According to the statement–the leaders of the "Unity" bloc kidnapped an SDU representative and after keeping him for two hours–released him. The verifications showed that while concluding the pre-election deals with citizens on the SDU’s part–the SDU representative S. Margarian met with the representative of the "Unity" bloc–who to verify the legality of the former’s actions invited him to the Election Campaign Headquaters of the "Unity" bloc. After a conversation Margarian returned to his election district. The candidate for Parliament–Aghasi Arshakian lodged a complaint with the Police Department of the Mashtots district of Yerevan–in which he stated that on May 24 while he was driving in the Achapniak district–his car was stoned from one of the residential buildings. In that connection the Prosecutor’s Offices of the Achapniak and Davidashen districts prepared materials. Forensic commodity examination was to be conducted for determining the damage–but Arshakian did not delivered his car for the examination without giving any explanations. On June 2 Arshakian requested the Prosecutor’s Office not to proceed with the facts of the case.
