Prime Minister Calls for Transparent Government

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"I admit the fact that many government members–including myself–have worked in different governmen’s since 1991," Prime Minister Vazgen Sargssian said at a meeting of the National Assembly June 18 in response to Aghasi Arshakian’s ("Right and Unity" bloc) remark that in the "years of plunder" half of the current government were "on a white horse."

"But I would like to say the following: Mr. Arshakian–had you been a minister in 1991-1992 and were you a minister now–somebody would certainly say the same about you. Unfortunately–values have become extremely vague. Heroism and treachery–nobility and meannness crossed the line and penetrated into each other’s domains. That is why it is difficult to give a clear assessment," the prime minister said.

He pointed out that he trusts the government members he preferred to work with–for he has worked with them since 1990-91.

While presenting the principles of the government’s activities–the prime minister pointed out that the government members are to be a single team–each of them having the sense of responsibility and inevitable punishment. According to him the government’s work should be transparent not only to the Parliament but also to the whole society. In that connection the prime minister promised to report back to the society every month. Sargssian stressed that refusing immunity and creating the field of confidence both for Armenian citizens and for foreign investors should become important tasks for the government. He stated that there are not and nor can there be any closed–privileged economic structures for the government.
