Premeditated Murders Decrease in Armenia

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–In 1998–93 premeditated murders and 52 attempted murders were registered in Armenia as compared to 100 premeditated murders and 36 attempted murders in 1997–Deputy Prosecutor General of Armenia Zhirair Kharatian said at a Prosecutor’s Office Board meeting held Wednesday.

In his turn–Senior Official of the Prosecutor’s Office Samvel Manoukian presented the data on similar crimes committed during the five months of 1999. 33 murders and 23 attempted murders were registered during this period against 34 and 12 respectively during the same period last year. In Yerevan–premeditated murders increased by 4 and attempted murders by 8.

In 17 (25.3 percent) cases fire-arms or explosives were used. Four murders of children committed by their mothers were registered. According to the analyses–24 murders and attempted murders registered and detected during the five months of 1999 were domestic–the result of strained family relations.
