Armenian Kurds Set Up Ocalan Protection Council

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–A joint session of the "Kurdistan" Committee and the Armenian-Kurdish Friendship Society was held Wednesday in Yerevan regarding the decision of the Turkish court to sentence leader of the Kurdish Workers’ Party Abdullah Ocalan to death.

Participants in the session issued a joint appeal to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan–US President Bill Clinton–Council of Europe and the Armenian leadership.

The appeal urges to promote a fair resolution of the Kurdish question and pressure Turkish authorities to call off the death sentence.

The document notes that otherwise Turkey will be swept by mass anti-Turkish repression–a civil war will break–Turkish diplomats will be harassed all over the world and embassies will be under constant threat. Also–Turkey as a despotic state will worsen its image in the eyes of the international community.

The participants in the session decided to set up a Committee for the Protection of Ocalan and formed an initiative group for this purpose. Representative of the initiative group Alihane Mame said that the group should draw up a plan of action of the Committee within three days and define its immediate tasks.

The Committee for the Protection of Ocalan will include representatives of public and political forces and intellectuals. Rallies–conferences–and collection of signature in support for Ocalan will be organized. A march to the US Embassy in Armenia will be held on July 1 at 12 p.m.
