YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"We protest against the disgraceful trial by the Turkish ‘justice’ and the verdict passed by the Turkish court sentencing PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan to death," the Armenian-Kurdish Friendship Committee and the Kurdistan Committee of Armenia’said in a joint statement.
The appeal was made public and forwarded to the US Embassy in Armenia and the UN Office on July 1 during a Kurdish demonstration of protest in Yerevan. The demonstration began in Liberty Square–continued at the US Embassy and was crowned with a meeting at the UN Armenian Office.
"We urge all nations–states–and the United Nations to stop the shameful court verdict imposed by Turkish authorities which has aroused a tide of protest and indignation all over the world," the document reads.
The authors of the appeal believe that Turkey would never have dared pass a death sentence on Ocalan "but the US Government–which is behind Turkey–encouraged it." The Armenian-Kurdish Friendship Committee and the Kurdistan Committee urge "all progressive nations of the world to show solidarity in the matter of a fair solution to the Kurdish problem–due estimation to the national-liberation struggle of the Kurdish people."
The demonstrators also emphasized that they did not have any hopes on the UN–because "the UN is only an instrument in the hands of the US–and that president Bill Clinton is the organizer of the reprisal against Ocalan."
