Ratification of PCA An Historic Moment

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"The implementation of the Armenia-EU Partnership and Cooperation Agreement is an historic event," head of the European Commission delegation in Armenia Ambassador Denis Corboy told journalists at a news conference Wednesday. "By signing this agreement Armenia decided to see a future with Europe," he added.

Corboy stressed that the agreement signed between the EU and the three republics of the South Caucasus is not just a friendship agreement–but a partnership with common objectives within common institutions such as the Cooperation Committee–the Parliamentary Committee and the Cooperation Council.

Corboy also noted that the PCA embodies almost all non-military spheres and serves as a platform for intensifying political–economic and cultural dialogue between EU-member states and Armenia.

Corboy also emphasized that the PCA will help harmonize Armenian legislation with the legislation of the European Union–allowing Armenia to be fully involved in European processes.

According to Corboy–the PCA provides a forum for cooperation not only with EU–but also among the three South Caucasus republics–setting the stage for the development of peaceful processes and settlement of conflicts in the region.

The head of the European Commission delegation noted that celebrations in light of the PCA ratification will be postponed until July 10 due to the death of the Catholicos Karekin I.

The Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and Armenia was signed in 1996. In 1999 it was ratified by all EU-member states and Armenia. The documen’s will be effective for 10 years–after which it can be prolonged for an additional 10 years.
