Seismic Warning System Developed for Power Plant

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The "Armatomenergyproject" has developed the theoretical basis and made necessary calculations for the advisability of organizing the radiotelemetric seismic warning system (RSWS) for the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant–Chief Engineer of "Armatomenergyproject" Hrant Hakobian told Noyan Tapan.

According to Hakobian–a seismic observation station was recently established at the power plant. But–while ordinary seismic protection system starts operating after the seismic waves reach the station–the RSWS starts the seismic protection system before the waves reach the plant. The RSWS system consists of a network of radioseismic posts stationed around the plant towards the seismic zones. The new system instantly sends an alarming radiosignal to the plant’s seismic protection system. Thus–the difference between the velocities of radio and seismic waves makes the warning of seismic danger possible.

Hakobian said that despite the fact that the efficiency of the RSWS was experimentally proven–its introduction to the Armenian power plant has been suspended because of the lack of finance.
