Early Local Elections Held in Armenia

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Early elections of local government bodies in Hrazdan–Charentsavan–the Kanaker-Avan community of Kotayk–and the Blagodarnoye community of Lori were held July 4.

During a Central Electoral Commission meeting held Tuesday–CEC Chairman Artak Sagradian announced the preliminary results. President of the Armauto company Koval Shakhgaldian was elected mayor of Charentsavan; vice-mayor of Hrazdan Ruben Baklajian–was elected mayor; Jivan Kamalian was elected head of the Kanaker-Avan community in the Kotayk region. Results of the elections in the Blagodarnoye community were not received at press time.

CEC member–Ashot Sargssian from the "Unity" bloc reported that the results of the elections of the mayor of Hrazdan will most likely be appealed in court–noting the discontent of some of the town districts immediately after the results of the elections were publicized; the people even blocked some roads.

According to Sargssian–the 13,000 votes received by this candidate from 40 thousand eligible voters is an unprecedented figure.

CEC Secretary Armenuhi Zohrabian said that early elections of local government bodies will soon be held in a number of other communities. On July 10 Spitak will elect a mayor; on July 11 elections will be held of the heads of the Yerevan boroughs Davidashen–Achapniak–Malatiya-Sebastiya–and Nork-Marash and of the head of the Shahumian community–Ararat region; on July 18 elections will be held of community leaders in the villages of Nerkin Getashen and Geghamabak–Gegharkunik region; and on July 25 Goris will elect a mayor.
