California Officials Pay Tribute to Karekin I

LOS ANGELES–The Western Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church of America received the following messages of condolences for His Holiness Karekin I Catholicos of All Armenia’s.

July 1–1999

Dear Bishop Mardirossian:

It is with deep sadness that Mrs. Davis and I extend our sympathies on the passing of His Holiness Karekin I–Catholicos of All Armenia’s. Although no words can adequately fill the void left by the passing of your beloved spiritual leader–may it be of some comfort to know that the legacy of his good works and inner strength will remain forever in the hearts of the communities he so enriched.

As Armenia made the difficult transition from a Soviet Republic to an independent state–Karekin I provided Armenia’s around the world with hope and spiritual guidance. His exemplary leadership–accomplishmen’s–and contributions will serve as an enduring memory for everyone.

Please accept our heartfelt condolences and know that our thoughts and prayers are with the Armenian American community during this difficult time of sorrow.

Statement by Congressman George Radanovich

"I extend my sincerest condolences to all Armenia’s upon hearing the news today of the death of His Holiness Karekin I after a long struggle with throat cancer.

In the spring of 1996 I had the honor of meeting His Holiness when I traveled to Armenia. I am deeply saddened by his passing; this day will be remembered as a day of mourning for all Armenia’s.

His Holiness Karekin I will be honored with a statement of tribute that I will submit into the Congressional Record."

I was saddened to learn of the loss of the great spiritual leader–His Holiness Karekin I–Catholicos of All Armenia’s His work in the Lord’s name touched not only the Armenian nation–but indeed the world. I was fortunate to have met with His Holiness Karekin I before he was stricken with cancer. His loss is indeed a personal one.

My prayers and the prayers of my family are with Armenia’s around the world in this time of mourning. Although nothing can temper the loss of this spiritual leader–I hope members of the Armenian Church will find solace knowing his contributions will remain with us always.

Please accept my deepest sympathy on the passing of His Holiness Karekin I–Catholicos of All Armenia’s. His legacy will undoubtedly serve as a source of comfort to the Armenian Apostolic Church and the Armenian Nation as a whole

His Holiness Karekin I will forever be remember for his leadership and his deeds. His life-long commitment to God and his people–as well as his commitment to strengthening and expanding ecumenical relations–elevated him to an internationally respected and admired spiritual leader.

Once again–I offer to you and the Armenian community my deepest sympathy as you grieve the loss of a great man and an outstanding spiritual leader–whom I had the privilege to meet during his last visit to Southern California.
