New Catholicos to be Elected in October

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–A meeting of the Supreme Ecclesiastic Council chaired by Interim Catholicos Archbishop Nerses Pozapalian with the secretaryship of Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem Archbishop Torgom Manoukian and Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople Archbishop Mesrop Mutafyan was held at the Mother See of St. Etchmiadzin from July 9-12.

The meeting discussed issues related to the election of the 132nd Catholicos of All Armenia’s.

The Supreme Ecclesiastic Council decided that the elections of the next Catholicos will be organized in accordance with the rules currently in effect on the date of the convocation of the National Church Council. According to a preliminary decision–the week-long gathering of the National Church Council will begin on October 26–1999.

The Supreme Ecclesiastic Council elected an electoral commission to oversee the preparations for the National Church Council convention.

Western Primate Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian will head the commission. Heads of the Armenian Dioceses of Southern Russia and Ukraine bishops Yeznik Petrossian and Nathan Hovhannissian were elected commission members.
