Russian Art Museum Needs Government Support

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–In the history of Russian art–the period from late 19th to early 20th centuries is original and unique. Russian artists from that period shook the world by the refinement of their works and new forms. A significant collection of works from that period is kept at the Museum of Russian Art in Yerevan. According to Director of the Museum Anahit Fljian–the collection at the museum is third in the world in quality and quantity after similar collections in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Russian paintings have been displayed at the Museum of Russian as far back as 1984 when the museum was opened displaying the private collection of well-known doctor Professor Abram Abramian.

The works of world-famous Russian artists Valentin Serov and Konstantin Korovin–who are considered to be the founders of impressionism in the Russian art–are found at the museum. Works by Arkhipov–Vrubel–Rerich–Behua–Lansere and others showing the first traces of elemen’s of cubism–pointillism and impressionism are also displayed.

The collection consists of a total of 311 museum pieces. The paintings–sketches of theater performances–drawings–china and glassware at the museum have not only great artistic value but also historic importance–Fljian said.

Fljian noted that–although the Armenian government has listed the Museum of Russian Art among the six biggest museums in the country and under the protection of the state–the government’s support is limited. The museum has enormous debts to the telephone company and other inconveniences–she said–and there are no funds to solve these problems. The main problem of the museum is–according to the director–that it has not acquired any exhibit in ten years.
