Vahan Hovanessian Discusses Karabakh Crisis

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"Authorities in both Karabakh and Armenia need to be more civil," Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Defense–National Security and Internal Affairs–representative of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Executive Council of Armenia–Vahan Hovanessian told a news conference Monday.

"It is very important that the domestic problem [in Karabakh] should not be resolved at the expense of the republic’s military potential," Hovanessian said. He said he was glad to see that parties did not take any "nervous action" while relations between the Karabakh branches were strained.

"This testifies that we are becoming more civilized," Hovanessian said.

Hovanessian refuted the idea that the political disputes in Karabakh might hinder a settlement to the Karabakh conflict.

He pointed out that the recent meeting of the Armenian and Azeri presidents in Geneva was favorable to the Armenian side.

Hovanessian assured the journalists that he would not be silent and address the public as a citizen of Armenia and as an ARF member.
