Modern Art Museum Replenished With New Works Today As Well

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–During its 27-years of activities the Museum of Modern Art in Yerevan has held numerous exhibitions. Among them are the exhibitions "The Museum of Modern Art on the Threshold of the 21st Century" and "11 Artists of Etchmiadzin" held in 1998. Moreover–the 1998 book entitled "Museum" dealing with the Museum of Modern Art and containing the biographies–photos–and reproductions of modern works won the first prize at the literary salon in Germany. The catalogues of Gabriel Manoukian and Armine Gevorgian and "11 artists of Etchmiadzin" were also published.

Director of the Museum Harutiun Torossian said that for a period of twenty years the Museum had been the only one in the former USSR He noted that the Museum owes its establishment to art critic Henrik Igitian. The works of Minas Avetissian–Vruir Galstian–Ashot Hovhannissian–Martin Petrossian and Marine Bazhbeuk-Melikian–artists who did not submit to the Soviet approach and whose works were generally banned–were exhibited at the Museum. According to Torossian–it was "a challenge" to the communist society.

Today the Museum has been replenished with new artwork. Works from the 1960s to the present are exhibited at the Museum. Many works are not displayed due to the lack of space. "Currently we have no money to purchase paintings. People graciously offer their paintings to us. We display them for a while–and as soon as new works appear–we display them," Torossian said.
