"We welcome the principled stand taken by our friend Elizabeth Dole on the Armenian Genocide and the issues we care about as Armenian Americans," said Aram Hamparian–Executive Director of the ANCA. "We value Elizabeth Dole’s friendship and look forward to working together with her toward official US recognition of the Genocide–self-determination for Nagorno Karabakh–and the lifting of the illegal Turkish and Azeri blockades of Armenia and Karabakh."

Dole Statement To Armenian Community

WASHINGTON–Former Red Cross president and Cabinet Secretary Elizabeth Dole today reiterated her support for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide and her commitment to the survival of a free and democratic Armenia and for the self-determination and autonomy of Karabakh.

"I believe that Armenia’s were clearly the victims of genocide early this century," Dole said.

Dole also said she supports greater assistance and stronger policies to strengthen Armenia’s economy and reorient its political and economic institutions toward the west. She said that it is in the national interest to promote and facilitate the ongoing development of a civil society and strong institutions in Armenia.

"The Republic of Armenia is to be congratulated on the evolution from the Soviet domination," Dole said.

Dole advocated the rights of Armenia’s living in the Nagorno Karabakh of Azerbaijan to peacefully negotiate self-determination with the Azerbaijan government. She also said she supports Congress’ ban on direct US assistance to Azerbaijan until the President certifies that Azerbaijan has taken clear and substantial steps to end its blockade of Armenia.

"I share your Christian values," Dole said. "And I celebrate with you 1700 years of devotion to that heritage."
