It’s the latest in a long list of awards for the Academy-Award nominated Atom Egoyan–who has been honored for his work by a handful of Canadian universities as well as by several other countries.
Of Armenian heritage–Egoyan was born in Egypt and raised in Victoria. He currently lives in Toronto.
Egoyan is on holiday in the wilds of British Columbia and could not be reached for comment.
A spokesman for the writer and director said that the Officer of the Order of Canada was the most personally rewarding honor that Egoyan could receive. " He wishes to reinforce how proud he is to be a Canadian."
The filmmaker behind The Sweet Hereafter and Exotica has a new film in Felicia’s Journey–his eighth feature. Felicia’s Journey–based on the novel by William Trevor–won standing ovations for Egoyan at Cannes and is the opening gala presentation at this fall’s 24th annual Toronto International Film Festival.
Egoyan–who is 38–is married to actress Arsinee Khanjian and they are the parents of a son.
