Chinese Envoy Briefs Armenia on Taiwan Problem

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Taiwan problem is China’s domestic affair and can be settled by means of negotiations between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait–Chinese Ambassador to Armenia Zhu Zhaoshun told reporters Wednesday.

The ambassador said that his announcement was in response to a recent statement by Head of the Taiwan administration Li Denhuei describing China-Taiwan relations as being interstate.

Zhaoshun stressed China’s principles on settling the problem: one country–two systems–high level of self-government and peaceful negotiations. According to the ambassador–China is striving to settle the problem peacefully. But China may use military force if Taiwan is seized by another state or abets "separatist forces," he announced.

China is a supporter of a multipolar world–which may guarantee stability and peace–the ambassador said. China hails the idea of a united Europe with Russia as part of it as well–he said. Also–Zhaoshun said that China is not striving to form a bloc with any state–including friendly states Russia and Iran.

The ambassador expressed satisfaction with Armenia’s position on the Taiwan problem. Armenia regards the Chinese government as the only legitimate representative of the entire Chinese people and promised not to establish any official relations with the Taiwan leadership.

The ambassador also stated that parallels cannot be drawn between the Karabakh problem and the Taiwan problem. Karabakh is part of another country through the fault of Soviet leaders–and the problem can be solved only at an intergovernmental level–he said.
