France to Appoint New Karabakh Negotiator

YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–France will soon name a new chief negotiator on Nagorno-Karabakh who will represent it in the Minsk Group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe–a visiting French diplomat said on Wednesday.

Ambassador-at-large Michel Fouchet told reporters in Yerevan that Georges Vaugier–France’s current Karabakh envoy–will be moved to another job but did not say who and when will replace him. France co-chairs the Minsk Group along with Russia and the United States.

Moscow and Washington have recently replaced their representatives in the Group which is tasked with finding a peace formula for the conflicting parties.

During his two-day stay in Yerevan Fouchet met with President Robert Kocharian and representatives of Karabakh. He is expected in Baku on Thursday.
