YEREVAN (AP)–Six people in military uniform stole into northern Armenia from neighboring Turkey and tried unsuccessfully to abduct two shepherds–a border guard commander said Saturday.
Border guards opened fire on the infiltrators–who penetrated about 500 yards into the Gumri district of Armenia on Friday–said Lt. Gen. Mikhail Naimilo–commander of the Russian border guards monitoring the frontier.
The infiltrators fled back into Turkey–leaving behind two M-16 rifles–he said.
It was not known whether any of the six were wounded.
Nor was it clear why they had crossed the border and tried to seize the shepherds.
Naimilo filed a protest with Turkish border guards–he said.
