Khomeini’s 100th Birthday Marked in Yerevan

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"Iran’s foreign policy is based on dialogue among civilizations–elimination of conflicts and is aimed at establishing peace and friendship," Iran’s Charge d’Affaires to Armenia Khekmatolla Gorbani said.

At a seminar in Yerevan on October 1 on the occasion of the 100th birthday anniversary of the leader and founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran–Imam Khomeini–Gorbani spoke highly of the contributions of the organizer of one of this century’s biggest revolutions to the liquidation of violence–oppression and pressure–and to human rights protection and justice enforcement.

Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Republic of Armenia National Academy of Sciences Nikolay Hovhannissian–noted Khomeini’s broad vision and great mind. He said that he was a great phenomenon–and the revolution led by him once shook the world and the great powers in the first place. The revolution caused panic in the United States–which used to impose its will on Iran in realizing its expansionist and strategic plans. The revolution aroused concerns also in the USSR–which was wary of a possible impact of the revolution on its Moslem republics.

Hovhannissian said that before the triumph of the revolution he was in Lebanon where he heard representatives of the Armenian community of Iran expressing concerns about the state of the Iranian Armenia’s should the revolution triumph and forwarded the information to representatives of the Shiite community–and then–through intermediaries–he received Khomeini’s guarantee: "I fully guarantee the security of the Armenia’s as worthy and rightful citizens of Iran." In his message Imam Khomeini said that he felt deep respect for this multi-talented nation. Saying that he knew well the history of the Armenian people–especially the 1915 Genocide–the spiritual leader of Iran made it clear that Iran was not a country capable of perpetrating a new Armenian genocide.

A salutatory message of National Assembly Speaker Karen Demirchian was read out at an event organized in the National Academy of Sciences building. Saying that there is huge potential and prospects of developing and deepening Armenian-Iranian relations–the Armenian top legislator expressed satisfaction with the fact that the two countries share views on many major foreign-policy issues–including Middle East and regional policies. Demirchian believes Armenian-Iranian cooperation to be a major factor of peace and stability in the region.
