Yerevan State University Marks Its 80th Anniversary

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Yerevan State University marked its 80th anniversary on October 4.

"The 80th anniversary is just an occasion to remember the past–to remember how our nation succeeded in finding enough strength for staying on the way towards the science while living in times of war and famine," Archbishop Shahe Achemyan–Dean of the Department of Theology–said in his speech. According to Ashot Alexanyan–Chairman of the Students Council–"despite the fact that the University has proved viable–we have yet to succeed in creating an educational institution to meet the scientific and educational deman’s of the third millennium."

Despite the achievemen’s of the University–students have got some claims to the educational system. Most of the students are dissatisfied with the Bachelor’s system being applied since last year suggesting four years’ study at baccalaureate which is not considered to be a full higher education and then–two years’ study at magistrate–which is not available to all of the students. Only the students with high marks may enter the magistrate–the quantity of places is very limited–there is no state order and not all of the students are able to pay for studies. Some tutors are not satisfied with this system either.

Eduard Ghazarian–Minister of Education and Science–has another opinion on the issue. He thinks that the educational system applied–despite some organizational shortcomings–has also advantages.

That day President Robert Kocharian awarded the St. Mesrop Mashtots Order to Radik Martirosian–Rector of YSU–Academician of the National Academy of Sciences–for his distinguished achievemen’s in the field of science and education and on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the University.
