Press Club Holds General Meeting Discusses Priorities

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The National Press Club held its second annual general election meeting on October 2. NPC Chairperson Narine Mkrtichian gave an annual report.

She stressed that the general meeting "is convened in hard times for Armenia–when the system of values created ten years ago is undergoing unprecedented changes." In such a situation–when "the public opinion is not an independent factor–the role of social structures and their significance is frequently challenged," the civil unions–which have a serious mission–must reconsider their tasks–programs and goals.

Mkrtichian reported that the NPC–which was established two and a half years ago–organized 76 meetings with public and political figures–clergymen and cultural workers under programs called "Mass media and democracy,"Armenia and elections,"The Diaspora," and "Spiritual Armenia." Besides the meeting–three visits of foreign journalists were also organized and aimed at covering the problems of domestic production.

Besides resolving unsettled problems–the top-priority task for next year is organizing an all-Armenian forum of journalists said the chairperson. An agreement was reached at the mass media conference held as part of the Armenia-Diaspora Forum according to which the NPC assumes the responsibility for coordinating the work of the forum.

Mkrtichian pointed out that the organization must contribute to the improvement of the social situation–and maintenance of democratic and national values. Thereafter–the meeting participants heard the report of the supervisory commission and elected the NPC chairperson–and members of the NPC Board and supervisory commission. Narine Mkrtichian was re-elected NPC chairperson. Tigran Harutyunian (Director of the "Noyan Tapan" information agency) was re-elected Board member. Narine Dilbarian of the "Azg" daily–Vardan Vardanian of the "A1+" TV company–and Armen Vardanian of the "Lurer" TV program–Armenian National TV were elected Board members. Gayane Milikian from the "Noyan Tapan" information agency was re-elected chairwoman of the supervisory commission. Haira Zohrabian of the "Haikakan Zhamanak" newspaper–and Sona Truzian of the "Hayots Ashharh" daily were elected members of the supervisory commission.

The meeting made a decision according to which the newly elected Board will discuss the issue of setting up an commission for ethics. The commission’s task will be the development of rules of conduct of journalists.
