President Assesses Diaspora Conference

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The atmosphere created following the Diaspora-Armenia Conference not only has created a strong base–but also the impetus for future activities–Armenian President Robert Kocharian told a meeting of the government commission on the Diaspora-Armenia Conference Wednesday.

The presidential press service reported that Kocharian has assessed the conference as being the first substantial step toward reforming Diaspora-Armenia relations–adding that the time has come for more concrete steps toward that goal.

Kocharian also said that the suggestions and discussion emanating from the conference will provide the footing for a more organized approach to finding practical solutions.

In discussing the conference–commission chairman foreign minister Vartan Oskanian said that working groups were in the process of being formed to follow-up on conference suggestions.

The commission members prioritized the creation of a cooperative information center–specifically the launch of a pan-Armenian broadcast channel. The establishment of a permanent youth center in Armenia–the creation of a development center and the formation of business groups

The commission decided that it would draw up a specific plan within a week–stipulating deadlines and responsibilities–as well as meet every three months to assess the pace of activities.
