October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Armenia’s Health Care Ministry–Yerevan State Medical University–the US-based Armenian-American Cultural Association–the Association of Women’s Health Care and the Armenian-American Mammography Center declared October breath cancer awareness month–co-chairwomen of the Mammography Center Hranoush Hakopian and Rita Balian announced at a news conference October 7.

They noted that to draw public attention to the necessity of the struggle against breast cancer–a "Walk of Health" will be held on October 16 in Yerevan. T-shirts bearing the emblem of the action will be sold and the entire profit will go to cover the Center’s needs. The walk will start at the Mammography Center and end at Liberty Square–where a concert will be held. According to Rita Balian–HSBC Armenia bank–Coca-Cola Bottlers Armenia–Fund of Orphanages–Mayor’s Office–National Radio and a number of other organizations will take part in the action.

Rita Balian also said that the Mammography Center organizes similar actions not only in Yerevan–but also in the United States–where this arrangement takes place on the first Saturday of June each year. For instance–following last year’s action $40 million were raised. She also said that the prime cost of one medical examination at the Center totals $60–while patients pay only $20. The rest of the sum is covered by means of fundraising.

Speakers also said that in two and a half years–a total of 9,027 women have been examined at the Center. In the last year the number of women examined at the Center has more than doubled. A total of 452 women were diagnosed with breast cancer and 377 of them underwent treatment. The Center’s employees also visit Armenia’s various regions–where they carry out on-the-spot examinations. Recently they visited Nagorno Karabakh–where 157 women were examined. According to Balian–analysis of examination results shows that cases of breast cancer are more frequently observed in mountainous regions.
