Diasporan Benefactor Honored at Literature & Art Museum

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–A meeting with Armenian American benefactor and bibliophile Haroutiun Simonian was held at the Literature & Art Museum on October 6. Simonian is known to have assisted in the publication of a series of books. According to Museum Director Henrik Bakhchinian–Simonian can be considered a worthy follower of the well-known benefactor Alexander Mantashev. Bakhchinian said that the Museum had asked the Ministry of Culture–Youth Affairs and Sports and Yerevan’s Municipality to confer the title of Honorary Citizen of Yerevan on Simonian. Speeches of appreciation were made by Academician of the National Academy of Sciences Levon Hakhverdian–Hovannes Toumanian’s granddaughter Irma Safrazbekian–Archbishop Mesrob Ashjian and other participants in the meeting.

Last year Simonian assisted in the roofing of the Khnko-Aper Library–the construction of a school and a palace of culture in the villages of Vosketas and Ashnak. A half-destroyed church in Dsegh was reconstructed with his financing.

In his speech Simonian stressed the importance of serving the Motherland. Simonian said he wasn’t an active participant in the recent Armenia-Diaspora Conference as he was disappointed with some events that took place in Armenia over the recent years.
