Kocharian Aliyev to Meet Monday at Border

BAKU–YEREVAN (Reuters–Noyan Tapan)–The presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia will meet on Monday on their border to discuss a the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict–Azerbaijan said on Friday.

Azeri President Haydar Aliyev will meet his Armenian counterpart–Robert Kocharian–near the village of Sandarac–a statement from Aliyev’s office said.

The two presidents are set to meet again in Istanbul at a summit of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe starting on November 18.

According to Azerbaijan’s official press–Albright has asked the two presidents to agree on a framework for resolving the dispute by then.

A meeting between the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan is also scheduled for Oct. 12 in Luxembourg–announced Armenia’s foreign minister Vartan Oskanian during a press briefing Friday.

He explained that previous meetings with his Azeri counterpart in Yalta and New York have breathed hope for the future of the peace talks.

Oskanian expressed hope that pending a clarification of the position by Azerbaijan–the peace talks may resume prior to the OSCE summit–scheduled to take place in Istanbul in November.

He–however–doubted that such an approach would be possible–but assessed that the recent activation of the US role in the peace process has been positive. Oskanian added that such a participation may pave the way for the resumption of talks prior to the OSCE summit.
