Council of Europe Official Says Armenia Azerbaijan Should

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–To help settle the Nagorno Karabakh conflict–it is reasonable that Armenia and Azerbaijan should become members of the Council of Europe simultaneously–an official of the information department of Council of Europe anonymously reported to Noyan Tapan. He stressed that any country is admitted to the Council of Europe on the basis of its merits.

Noting that there has been no precedent–when the two countries–being involved in "such a conflict" simultaneously wished to become CE members–the information department official said: "I do not think that the accession of the two countries to the Council of Europe is impossible until the Karabakh conflict is settled." According to him–the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe may accept such a format–under which the admission to the Council of Europe would help Armenia and Azerbaijan achieve a final settlement to the conflict.
