Azeri Foreign Minister Karabakh Adviser Resign

BAKU (Armenpress–Reuters)–Azeri foreign minister Tofiq Zulfugarov presidential adviser Eldar Namazov submitted their resignation–the Turan news agency reported Monday.

According to a top government aide–Zulfugarov cited health concerns for his resignation–however political analysts contend that the resignations resulted from disagreemen’s in the President Haydar Aliyev’s approach to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution.

Earlier this month–Azeri Presidential advisor Vafa Guluzade also announced his resignation.

"I don’t want to give the reasons why but I can confirm that yesterday [Sunday] I asked to resign and the president is now considering it," Namazov–who has advised Aliyev on Karabakh for five years–told Reuters by telephone.

The presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia have held several meetings recently to try to end the deadlock over the region that has poisoned their relations since the collapse of the former Soviet Union.

Azerbaijan’s opposition fears that Aliyev is poised to give away Karabakh and has criticized the ultra-secret negotiations–demanding that the main points of the talks be made public.

Western political analysts say politicians may not want to be connected with a deal over the region and connected the recent resignation of Guluzade with the ongoing negotiations.

"It’s the unjust peace syndrome and it was probably the driving force behind Vafa Guluzade’s resignation," one analyst said.
