National Army Calls for Power Ministers’ Resignation

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Armenian National Army issued a statement Thursday condemning the deadly shoot-out at the National Assembly and calling for the resignation of Armenia’s interior and national security ministers–as well as the prosecutor general. Below is the translated text of that statement.

"Dear compatriots,

"A well-thought-out–deceitful crime was committed in the meeting hall of the National Assembly on October 27. It was a conspiracy aimed against the future of the Armenian people and Armenian statehood.

"Those who allowed the plotting and committing of this crime are responsible to the people.

"Why was this pre-meditated crime not exposed? Why were the armed monsters able to make their way into the parliament building unimpeded? Can the people truly rely on an impartial prosecution of the crime? The events could have been possible only under the conditions of an absolute absence of security management in the country.

"The situation is fraught with unpredictable consequences–the internal and external security of our state is in danger. At this crucial moment for the nation and the country the National Army cannot stay indifferent. The National Army deems it to be its duty to defend peace and independence gained at the cost of the lives and blood of many sons of the homeland and years of hardship endured by the entire nation.

"The National Army deems it to be its duty to champion constitutional order and democracy–the proper way chosen by Armenia and the Armenian people.

"We declare with utter resentment that the deman’s of the National Army Command in connection with the assassinations of Major-General Artsrun Margarian and Deputy Minister Vahram Khorkhoruni were completely ignored by law enforcement agencies. As a result–the chain of crimes plaguing the country is continuing. Therefore–we demand that the republic’s Prosecutor General–Ministers of National Security and the Interior be immediately dismissed.

"We reiterate our support and assistance to the President in establishing law and order in the country."
