ETCHMIADZIN (Armenpress)–Newly-elected Speaker of the National Assembly Armen Khachatrian visited the Etchmiadzin Monday to convey his congratulations to the newly-ordained Catholicos of All Armenia’s–His Holiness Karekin II.

The Catholicos–once again–expressed condolences to Khachatrian over the events of October 27–and said that the Armenian people will find the strength to overcome this obstacle.

The pontiff also congratulated Khachatrian on his recent election to head Armenia’s National Assembly–expressing confidence that the newly-elected leader will do his utmost to elevate the republic and the Armenian people.

Khachatrian pledged that he would continue the path his mentor–the slain National Assembly Speaker Karen Demirchian–had forged–adding that he was confident he would receive due support from his colleagues.

"Fostering unity and cooperation is imperative today," commented Khachatrian who added that the slain leaders of the republic were seeking unity through their policies.

Following his meeting with the Catholicos–Khachatrian told reporters that–"I came to receive the blessing of the Catholicos of All Armenia’s. I come to the Holy See to cleanse my soul and receive new impetus for future activities," said Khachatrian.

"Today we are faced with a great challenge. The best expression of respect to the memory of our fallen colleagues would be the realization of their dreams. The key to that is our every-day unity and peaceful work," concluded Khachatrian.

Earlier on Monday– President Robert Kocharian met with Khachatrian

The two conferred about the current situation in Armenia and exchanged views regarding a number of important issues.

The president voiced confidence that the supreme legislative body of Armenia will make its contribution toward efforts aimed at overcoming the present difficult situation.

The sides also discussed the work of the National Assembly. Kocharian voiced confidence that the constructive and efficient cooperation between legislative and executive bodies will be continued and the traditions maintained.
