Armenian Church Becomes ECEN Member

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Armenian Apostolic Church has become a member of the European Christian Environmental Network–the official of the Ministry of Nature Protection–Diana Haroutiunian–who represented the Armenian Church at the ECEN second international assembly at the Loccum Academy near Hanover–Germany–told Noyan Tapan. The arrangement was organized as part of the movement for sustainable development in Europe.

Haroutiunian pointed out that the church’s participation in this movement was supported by the late Catholicos of All Armenia’s Karekin I–who participated in the Second European Ecumenical Assembly in Graz in 1997.

ECEN was set up as a direct result of this Assembly. This year the assembly determined the main directions of the ECEN’s activities and recognized the prevention of the global climate change as the priority direction of ECEN’s activities.

The assembly accepted the proposals of the Armenian side on the elaboration of environmental projects in which churches of both developed and developing countries would be involved in the West-East and North-South directions.

The assembly adopted the resolution on introducing the Day of Creation in the church calendar.

The assembly also discussed the need for churches exercising moral control over the international environmental documen’s and conventions.
