Armenia’s WTO Status to Be Decided Soon

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Armenia’s full membership in the World Trade Organization will be decided within the next two months–if the National Assembly and government of Armenia adopt a package of legislative documen’s–the Ministry of Economy quoted Minister Armen Darbinian as reporting from Seattle–where he is attending the WTO international conference.

According to Darbinian–there are still issues on which the sides should come to agreement and certain problems requiring .

Darbinian denied that ArmenTel’s monopoly on the country’s telecom for 15 years is an obstacle to Armenia’s joining the WTO. According to him–the states possessing decisive influence in the WTO want to get the most favorable conditions on the Armenian market for the activities of the own telecom companies–which is impossible with the presence of ArmenTel’s license.

"I am sure that we will be able to overcome these difficulties and soon we will come to terms with our partners," commented the minister.

Darbinian stressed that WTO membership will open vast opportunities for Armenia to set deman’s to countries willing to join the WTO regarding Armenian goods.
