ARF Should Increase its Influence Says Edward Hovanessian At ARF Day

GLENDALE–The imperative to increase the influence of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation through work directly related to the needs and aspirations of the Armenian people was outlined by keynote speaker Edward Hovanessian during the ARF Day Celebration Sunday which attracted more than 1000 community members at the Glendale High School Auditorium.

Hovanessian–an advisor to Armenia’s minister of culture and the director of the Center for Armenian Studies–underlined the importance for the ARF to immerse itself in the daily concerns of the Armenian people and thus expand its influence in socio-political circles–in order to become the eventual choice of the people for government.

The ARF Day Celebration–organized by the Western US Central Committee–marked the 109th anniversary of the party formation in 1890. Present at the celebration were Western Prelate Bishop Moushegh Mardirossian–Armenia’s Consul General to Los Angeles Armen Melkonian–leaders of the ARF and affiliate organizations–Assemblyman Scott Wildman (D-43)–Glendale City Councilman Rafi Manoukian–State Assembly candidate Paul Krekorian–as well as representatives of the Social-Democratic Hunchakian party and the Armenian Democratic League Western US (Ramkavar party).

In his remarks to the audience–ARF Western US Central Committee chairman Hovig Saliba outlined the current situation of the ARF organization in the Western US–adding that the organization’s main objective is–and has always been–to work for and with the people. In that regard–he stressed that the ARF was not interested in engaging in argumen’s and discord with any entity in the community or the political spectrum.

The program began with a flag ceremony conducted by the Homenetmen Pasadena Azadamard chapter and was followed by the singing of the national anthems by Garen Gharibian.

The ARF anthem was performed by the father and son team of Raffik and Haybert Alahverdian–who also performed several patriotic songs during the program.

Mistress of Ceremonies Lena Bozoian welcomed the attendees and stated that once a year the ARF–through its anniversary celebration–provides a report of its activities to the community and marks the anniversary of the party’s establishment with its members and supporters alike.

She–then–invited Melkon Melkonian–a representative of the Central Executive of the Armenian Youth Federation to present the organization’s message to the crowd.

The celebration also included a video presentation on the ARF’s activities in Armenia–performance of Armenian melodies by the Winds of Passion ensemble–as well as rendition of patriotic songs by Karabakh freedom fighter Mgrdich Mgrdchian accompanied on the piano by Armen Aharonian.
