Ghoukassian Says No Opposition in Karabakh

STEPANAKERT (Noyan Tapan)–Nagorno-Karabakh Republic president Arkady Ghoukassian said Tuesday that there were no opposition forces working within Karabakh–explaining that if such opposition existed they should have–by now–articulated their political platform.

"On the other side [of the spectrum] are skeptics who don’t know what they want," stated Ghoukassian.

The Karabakh president said that everyone must carry out his/her role and not overstep boundaries.

This comment was in direct reference to former Karabakh defense minister and current commander of the Karabakh Armed Forces Samvel Babayan–who is attempting to carve a niche for himself in other spheres of influence.

"I believe that Samvel Babayan should focus on the Army–since he is incapable of involving himself with other matters given that he has neither the educational background nor the experience," commented Ghoukassian.

He denied that a criminal investigation has been launched against Babayan–but declared that he had differences with commander and thus had appointed a more suitable individual to lead the defense ministry.

Ghoukassian declared that all matters related to Karabakh will be open since the current situation deman’s that–given that previously all issues were handled under war conditions.
