Oct. 27 Targeted National Forces ARF Leader Says

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"The October 27 events were directed against national forces at power. Some of these forces received a blow when Armenia’s top officials were assassinated–while some are currently being dragged into internal political rumbles," chairman of the National Assembly’s standing committee on defense–national security and internal affairs–representative of the Executive Council of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Vahan Hovanessian told journalists on December 9.

Stressing that the ARF sees no need to hold new presidential elections–he suggested assessing the fourth Congress of the Yerkrapah Union of Volunteers not on the basis of "certain statemen’s or applause–but on the basis of the resolution adopted at the Congress."

"Yerkrapah is a serious force. When Vazgen Sargsyan and Albert Bazeyan managed to lead that force out from under the influence of anti-national forces–Yerkrapah became a stabilizing factor of the domestic situation in the republic," Hovanessian noted. He voiced concern over the threat of spreading the Armenian National Movement’s influence on Yerkrapah. "If these attempts are successful–Yerkrapah will turn into a destabilizing factor," Hovanessian said. He recalled that "during Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s tenure–there were attempts to turn Yerkrapah into a baton for the people."

"After the October 27 events the ARF has been naturally exercising restraint since its top priority was to ensure stability in the country," head of the ARF’s parliamentary faction David Lokian said. "But if some forces describe our restraint as inertness and believe that they are allowed to do or say whatever they want–they are greatly mistaken. At least it is erroneous to hold such an opinion about the ARF. I can say that in the near future the ARF will take steps aimed at ensuring real stability in the country," Lokian stressed.
