Oskanian in Tehran to Review Expansion of Ties

TEHRAN (IRNA)–Armenian foreign minister Vartan Oskanian–arrived in Iran Tuesday night to review further expansion of Tehran-Yerevan ties with senior Iranian officials.

Upon arrival at Mehrabad airport–he expressed happiness over his visit to Tehran. The Armenian foreign minister–who is heading a political delegation–stressed that expansion of bilateral relations requires further exchange of visits between the two countries’ political officials.

Oskanian said that during his two-day visit–he will discuss promotion of Iran-Armenia political–economic and cultural ties as well as regional security with Iranian officials.

Describing Iran’s role in the region as positive–he stressed that the country’s balanced policy regarding the regional crises–including that of Karabakh–has led to establishment of peace and stability in the entire region.

During his stay in Tehran–Oskanian is to meet the speaker of the Islamic consultative assembly (majlis) Ali Akbar Nateq Nouri–first vice-president Hassan Habibi–and his counterpart Kamal Kharrazi.

Oskanian also met and conferred with Iran’s speaker of Islamic consultative assembly (majlis) Ali-Akbar Nateq-Nouri and called for expansion of relations in all areas between Iran and Armenia.

Oskanian thanked Iran for its stance on recent Armenian events and added relations between Iran and Armenia have deep historical roots and that the two sides ought to do their best in order to bolster those.

He referred to Iran’s role in solving of regional problems as important and called for more active participation on part of Iran in solving of problems.

Meanwhile–Nateq-Nouri expressed utter sorrow for the recent events in Armenia and conveyed his condolence to the foreign minister. Nateq-Nouri also described bilateral and multilateral relations between Iran and Armenia as very satisfactory and important and expressed hope that with due exchange of views among political and economic delegations of the two countries these relations would further expand.

He described the role of Iran-Armenia joint economic commission in reaching agreemen’s for Iran-Armenia as well as for the region as positive and expressed hope for the speedy work of the commission and stated readiness of Iran’s majlis for approving the agreemen’s reached between two countries.

He also added the issue of Karabakh conflict can only be solved by dialogue and by agreemen’s between Azerbaijan–Armenia and regional countries and added to continue with the current situation would be to invite foreign intervention and political abuse of the regional issues.

Iranian foreign minister Kamal Kharrazi told Oskanian Wednesday that the countries of the Caucasus have enough common interests and concerns to opt for a united security strategy.

Kharrazi warned against the suspicious plots that some external powers try to impose on the region–and stressed further cooperation among regional states.

He said the north-south plan is pivotal and highly significant plan in its kind to encounter such suspicious plots.

He added that Iran is ready to raise its economic relations with Armenia and help implementation of joint ventures on roads and tunnel building and gas transfer projects with the republic.

Elsewhere in his remarks–Kharrazi said that assassination of the chairman of the Armenian parliament–Karen Dermichian–Armenian prime minister–Vazgen Sargsyan–the deputy chairman of the parliament–Yuri Bakhshian and the minister of operative issues–Leonard Petrosian–showed that some are not for stability and security of Armenia and the region.

He said there had been special motives behind the ongoing crises and events in the sensitive Caucasian region. he said that the issue on security system of the region is of high significance.

He welcomed visit to Iran of Armenian prime minister Aram Sargsyan as well as the Tehran-Yerevan joint commission convention.

Oskanian said on his part that his country believes that Iran’should have more active contribution to settlement of regional issues.

He stressed the importance of security arrangemen’s for the sensitive and fragile Caucasus region.

He briefed Kharrazi on latest developmen’s in the Caucasus–especially on Karabakh dispute and six rounds of talks held between Azeri and Armenian presidents as well as recent Istanbul session–and stressed the importance of north-south axis plan for Yerevan and the region.

He thanked Iran for attending the burial ceremony of Armenian officials and said the coming months would be very vital and crucial for his country.

He said that his country is interested in the visit to Iran of its premier in a near future–and called for increasing the volume of commercial transactions and implementation of joint venture projects.
