Unity Bloc Say Early Presidential Election Unlikely

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"The calls for holding an early presidential election made during the recent congress of the Yerkrapah Union of Volunteers weren’t unexpected–because Yerkrapah is a multi-layered organization," Vardan Mkrtchian–member of the People’s Party of Armenia–secretary of the Unity faction in parliament–said at a news briefing on December 9.

According to Mkrtchian–there is a certain discontent among some Yerkrapah members connected with "their role during the 1998 presidential election and their role today."

Mkrtchian said that those speeches would become a subject for discussion at the next congress of the Republican Party of Armenia due to begin on December 18 as well as at the upcoming meeting of the Republican Council of the People’s Party of Armenia’scheduled for December 14. "Then it will become clear whether the sentimen’s expressed in those speeches will be kept alive and further developed or not," Unity’s representative added. He personally thinks that "there is no issue of holding an early presidential election on Armenia’s political scene now."
